Young Nigeriens commit to protecting the River Niger
The Association of Young Water and Sanitation Professionals of Niger (AJPEA Niger), in partnership with the Initiative for the Tree, recently organized a large tree-planting operation in Neni Goungou, near the 3rd bridge in Niamey. This initiative is part of the Dji Mansa project, dedicated to ecological sustainability.
In collaboration with the Sorkos, local species were selected and planted for their ability to purify water and slow down the silting of the Niger River. This participatory approach values traditional knowledge in natural resource management.
In addition, moringa seedlings were distributed to the women present, along with information on the plant's nutritional and medicinal benefits. Each participant received two plants, with the responsibility of nurturing them to contribute to their family's food security.
The main objectives of this operation were to strengthen the ecological resilience of the riverbanks, protect local biodiversity, and improve the water quality of the Niger River.
