Urban Sanitation: AfWASA Conducts a Strategic Audit in the Cities of Anyama and Blantyre

The African Water and Sanitation Association (AfWASA) is conducting an urban sanitation audit from May 27 to June 13 in the cities of Anyama (Côte d’Ivoire) and Blantyre (Malawi), as part of its program "strengthening AfWASA and Operators for the Implementation of Citywide Inclusive Sanitation (SAO-CWIS)."

This initiative aims to improve sanitation services in these two pilot cities using the Citywide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS) approach. In a context where access to safely managed sanitation remains a major challenge for many African cities, the audit seeks to establish a comprehensive assessment of existing infrastructure and services, evaluate their inclusivity, and identify technical, institutional, and climate-related barriers to their proper functioning.

The evaluation is based on a rigorous methodology, including a literature review, field surveys, data collection and analysis, interviews with local stakeholders, and the application of CWIS criteria related to equity, sustainability, accountability, planning, and climate resilience.

Ultimately, the recommendations resulting from this exercise are expected to guide strategic decision-making to strengthen services, improve accessibility for all population segments — including the most vulnerable — and promote sustainable and inclusive urban development, in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals.
