AfWASA and RWSN Honor the winners of the 1st African Women in WASH Award
The African Water and Sanitation Association (AfWASA) in partnership with the Rural Water and Sanitation Network (RWSN) officially honor the winners of the 1st African Women in WASH Award during the closing ceremony of the 23rd AfWASA International Congress and Exhibition held in Yaounde, Cameroon. This saw the awarding of trophies to 20 women in the WASH sector who had distiguished themselves in their fields.
The main objective for instituting this award was to address a specific institutional deficit: the absence of a structured, Africa-led mechanism to systematically identify, document, and amplify women’s leadership across the WASH value chain.
The Awards were in Six categories:
- Top Woman in WASH Leadership Award
- Inclusive Innovation & Entrepreneurship Award
- Indigenous Impact & Grassroots Champion
- Policy & Advocacy Trailblazer Award
- Youth Rising Star (Under 35
- Lifetime Achievement Award
Out of over 150 nominations from 48 countries the 25 member Juries identified the Winners for the 1st Women in WASH Awards as:

This initiative is not a one off project but a recurring platform, building a growing network of laureates who can mentor peers, influence policy dialogue and inspire future entrants into the profession.
